Eighteen children aged 10 to 15 interested in nature; bicycling and the non-standard vocation took part in this outdoor challenge that was held for the first time in the region. The agenda was developed with the support of the partner organization - Friluftsrådenes Landsforbund (FL) from Norway.
It was intended to broaden the kids’ knowledge about the region and to involve them in outdoor activities aimed at knowing, preserving and promoting the phenomenal natural resources of the Devetaki Plateau.
Neither the unusual heat – over 35°C nor the hard (sometimes) biking routes languished the enthusiasm of the 18 participants during the one-week adventure. They had the chance to visit some of the most interesting and the newest attractions in the nine villages developed under the project. They explored deep caves, climbed up miraculous waterfalls, went into forests, and swam in the lakes. They learned history from the ancient remains, geography – by observation the beautiful landscape from newly established viewpoints, and biology – discovering bugs, animals, trees, and herbs. The children were also able to study some traditional recipes from the villages and to cook and eat some of them. And, above all, they had a lot of fun biking, hiking, swimming, and playing together.
The main idea was to develop and test an activity that stimulates children’s positive attitude towards nature as well as to introduce outdoor recreation and outdoor learning tradition that is still new for the region and for Bulgaria. Next year such a summer school will be regularly organized in the Devetaki Plateau so that many more children can take part in this miraculous adventure.
